Instructor Requirements

The Alpine Training Project (ATP) offers a complete, turnkey framework enabling physical therapists (PTs), physical therapist assistants (PTAs), and clinic owners to deliver structured, evidence-based dryland ski conditioning classes directly within their facilities.

Designed by sports physical therapy specialists and former medical providers for the US Ski Team, the ATP instructor pathway equips clinicians with exercise prescription methodologies that bridge clinical rehabilitation and mountain performance. Participating clinicians earn 4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) while offering structured pre-season conditioning that reduces knee injury risk, optimizes tri-planar dynamic stability, and improves athletic durability on snow.

Operational Metric Program Specification
Course Accreditation 4 Approved Continuing Education Units (CEUs) via Online Certification
Delivery Framework 6-Week In-Clinic Group Circuit (1x/week, 60 minutes per session)
Primary Launch Window Fall Pre-Season On-Ramping (October through November)
Class Capacity Scalable cohorts (6 to 12 participants per certified instructor)
Turnkey Assets Marketing collateral, digital enrollment portal, and automated payment processing
Digital Integration 6-Month Online Training Membership included for every enrolled athlete

Professional Benefits for Physical Therapists and Private Practices

Integrating the Alpine Training Project into a clinic provides clear operational, clinical, and financial advantages:
  • Cash-Based Practice Growth: Group ski conditioning sessions generate recurring out-of-pocket revenue, allowing practices to diversify income without adding administrative billing overhead.
  • Direct-to-Consumer Patient Acquisition: Hosting seasonal conditioning classes positions the practice as a local center of excellence for winter sports medicine, creating an organic patient acquisition channel for orthopedic physical therapy and sports performance services.
  • Advanced Exercise Prescription Skills: Clinicians master tri-planar movement screening, eccentric quadriceps loading protocols, and reactive neuromuscular training tailored to alpine, snowboard, and backcountry athletes.
  • Complete Operational Support: ATP provides promotional assets, handles participant registration, safety clearance criteria, and integrated digital payment handling, allowing clinicians to focus entirely on client engagement and instruction.

Evidence-Based Ski Conditioning Periodization

The ATP curriculum translates contemporary sports physical therapy research into a progressive 6-week dryland conditioning protocol. The periodization targets the physiological mechanisms responsible for high rates of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) trauma and fatigue-induced lower extremity injuries in winter sports. The progressive curriculum is structured into three distinct two-week blocks:
  • Phase I: Foundational Mobility, Joint Alignment, and Movement Quality (Weeks 1–2): Focuses on restoring terminal ankle dorsiflexion, multi-planar hip mobility, and lumbo-pelvic dissociation. Instructors assess and correct squat biomechanics, establishing the athletic posture required to absorb terrain variations.
  • Phase II: Eccentric Strength, Dynamic Deceleration, and Rotational Control (Weeks 3–4): Introduces progressive eccentric quadriceps overload and hamstring co-contraction drills designed to withstand downhill forces. Workouts emphasize frontal and transverse plane deceleration to maintain dynamic knee control during high-speed turns.
  • Phase III: Tri-Planar Dynamic Control, Reactive Agility, and Plyometrics (Weeks 5–6): Advances to high-velocity movement patterns, incorporating lateral pogo hops, reactive agility drills, and multi-directional plyometrics to prepare athletes for variable terrain and uneven snow conditions.
In addition to the core progression, certified instructors are trained to deliver two sport-specific tracks:
  • Resort & Alpine Track: Emphasizes continuous carving mechanics, mogul absorption, and quad-dominant endurance for lift-served skiing.
  • Backcountry & Splitboard Track: Combines downhill descent preparation with uphill skinning mechanics, hip flexor endurance, kick-turn mobility, and loaded pack stability.
  • Adaptive Loading Models: Each track provides structured high-impact and reduced-impact variations, ensuring safe participation for athletes managing previous joint injuries or spinal sensitivity.

Instructor Eligibility and Facility Parameters

To maintain clinical standards across all participating locations, ATP requires candidate instructors and host facilities to meet specific professional criteria:
Evaluation Category Requirement Parameter
Professional Licensure Active, unrestricted State Physical Therapist (PT) or PT Assistant (PTA) license
Clinical Background Orthopedic rehabilitation, sports medicine, or CSCS/OCS credentialing
Athletic Familiarity Personal experience in alpine skiing, snowboarding, or backcountry touring
Facility Footprint 500 to 1,000 square feet of open clinical or gym floor space
Required Equipment Loop resistance bands, step benches/plyo boxes, and light dumbbells (5–25 lbs)

Clinic Financial Modeling and Economic Structure

Hosting an ATP 6-week conditioning series provides high hourly yields relative to conventional clinical hours. Because ATP handles web registration and provides complete instructional materials, clinic overhead remains minimal.
Cohort Parameter Financial Metric
Example Cohort Size 12 Registered Participants
Participant Registration Fee $230 per athlete (Includes 6 live classes + 6-month access to ATP’s online training plans)
Instructor Payment  $1736.28
Instructional Time Commitment 6 Teaching Hours (1 hour per week) 6 Class Prep Hours (1 hour per week)  5-6 Onboarding Hours
Effective Yield $289.38 per instructional hour $96.46 per total hours (teaching, prep, and onboarding)
